As part of Darbar’s Liberators of Humanity series, a Carnatic concert titled Tyagaraja’s Path to Liberation Through Music will be presented at the Barbican Centre on 19 March 2026. The program focuses on the works of Saint Tyagaraja (1767–1847), whose kritis remain foundational to South Indian classical music.
The concert features the acclaimed Carnatic vocal duo Ranjani–Gayatri, known for their close vocal harmony, repertoire depth, and interpretive clarity. Their performances are widely recognized for balancing technical precision with bhava-driven expression.
Presented in a Chennai-style kutcheri format, the approximately 2.5-hour recital follows the traditional Carnatic concert structure, allowing ragas and compositions to unfold gradually. The thematic focus highlights Tyagaraja’s philosophy of devotion, simplicity, and spiritual connection through music.
The vocalists will be accompanied by Delhi Sairam on mridangam, Vittal Rangan on violin, and S. Krishna on ghatam. Each accompanying artist contributes to the interactive framework typical of Carnatic ensemble performance, where melodic and rhythmic dialogue shape the concert flow.
Framed as a listening-focused experience, the program invites audiences to engage deeply with raga development and lyrical meaning, reflecting the devotional roots of Tyagaraja’s compositions.
Audience Note:
Attendees under 14 must be accompanied by someone aged 16 or over.
