Biography

Gayatri was born in Mumbai to N. Balasubramanian and Smt. Meenakshi Balasubramanian, a Carnatic vocalist. Growing up in a household immersed in classical music, she displayed early musical aptitude, reportedly identifying a wide range of ragas in early childhood. Her initial vocal grounding came from her mother, followed by systematic violin training under Sangita Bhushanam Prof. T. S. Krishnaswami at the Shanmukhananda Sangeet Vidyalaya. Together with her elder sister Ranjani, she developed as a violinist and began performing as part of a violin duet while still in her preteen years.

As a violinist, Gayatri performed extensively in sabhas across India and at international venues. In this phase of her career, she appeared both as a duet artist and as an accompanist to senior musicians of the Carnatic tradition, including D. K. Pattammal and M. Balamuralikrishna. These formative years shaped her approach to melody, rhythm, and ensemble interaction, grounding her in the idioms of traditional Carnatic performance.

From 1997, Gayatri transitioned into vocal performance after becoming a disciple of P. S. Narayanaswamy. Her work as a vocalist is situated within the classical Carnatic framework, drawing on a multilingual repertoire that includes compositions in Sanskrit, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati. As part of Ranjani–Gayatri, she has appeared regularly in the major concert circuits of India, including the annual December music season in Chennai, and at international festivals and cultural institutions across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Gayatri’s artistic activity also includes composition. Along with her sister, she has set numerous abhangs and devotional texts to music, particularly from the Marathi saint tradition, as well as other lighter classical forms. These compositions form a distinctive component of their concert programming and are documented in studio and live recordings. The duo’s discography includes thematic albums, concert archives, and season recordings that trace their evolving repertoire and performance practice.

In addition to performance, Gayatri is actively engaged in teaching and mentoring. Through workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and sustained pedagogy, she contributes to the transmission of Carnatic vocal and instrumental traditions to younger generations in India and abroad. Her professional life reflects continuous engagement across multiple roles—violinist, vocalist, accompanist, composer, and educator—within the contemporary Carnatic music landscape.

Gayatri’s work, in association with her sister as Ranjani–Gayatri, has been recognised by numerous cultural institutions and sabhas. Their honors include awards from major music academies and organizations, and in 2026, they received the Padma Shri from the Government of India.
