Biography
Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (1930–2016) was a towering presence in Carnatic music whose career spanned more than seven decades. Born in Sankaraguptam in present-day Andhra Pradesh, he was raised in a musical household and trained under Parupalli Ramakrishnayya Pantulu, a direct descendant of the Tyagaraja shishya parampara. His exceptional talent was evident early, and he gave his first full-length concert at the age of eight, soon earning recognition as a prodigious musician.
By his teenage years, Balamuralikrishna had mastered all 72 melakarta ragas and had already begun composing extensively. Over the course of his life, he composed more than 400 works across every major Carnatic form, including varnams, kritis, tillanas, and bhavageethas. He was among the very few composers to create compositions in all 72 melakarta ragas.
A defining aspect of his musical journey was his spirit of experimentation. While remaining firmly anchored in classical grammar, he introduced new ragas such as Mahathi, Lavangi, Sarvasri, and Ganapathi, some using only three or four notes. He also developed an original tala framework known as the “Mukhi Tala” system, expanding rhythmic possibilities within Carnatic music.
Beyond vocal music, Balamuralikrishna was a rare multi-instrumentalist, proficient in violin, viola, mridangam, kanjira, and other instruments. He is credited with introducing the viola into Indian classical music and performing solo viola concerts. His concerts were known for blending musical sophistication with a strong sense of aesthetic communication, appealing to both connoisseurs and wider audiences.
He performed extensively across India and internationally, collaborating with leading musicians from both Carnatic and Hindustani traditions and presenting jugalbandis with prominent North Indian artists. His contributions also extended to cinema, where he worked as a playback singer, composer, and actor in multiple Indian languages.
Recognized globally for his artistry, Balamuralikrishna received numerous honours, including the Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, along with international distinctions. His legacy is preserved through recordings, institutions, and the continued influence of his musical vision on future generations.
