Biography

Ranjani was born in Mumbai to N. Balasubramanian and Smt. Meenakshi Balasubramanian, a Carnatic vocalist. Raised in a Tamil Brahmin household where classical music formed an integral part of daily life, she exhibited musical aptitude from an early age. Her initial grounding in vocal music came from her mother, while her formal instrumental training began under Sangita Bhushanam Prof. T. S. Krishnaswami at the Shanmukhananda Sangeet Vidyalaya. Ranjani trained as a violinist alongside her younger sister, Gayatri, and the two began performing as a violin duo while still in their early teens.

As a violinist, Ranjani appeared in sabhas across India and in international venues, performing both as a duet artist and as an accompanist. During this phase, she shared the stage with senior musicians of the Carnatic tradition, including D. K. Pattammal and M. Balamuralikrishna. These early years established her grounding in manodharma (improvisation), rhythmic structure, and ensemble sensitivity.

From 1997 onward, Ranjani transitioned formally into vocal performance after becoming a disciple of P. S. Narayanaswamy. Her work as a vocalist developed within the classical Carnatic framework, drawing upon repertoire in multiple Indian languages, including Sanskrit, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati. As part of Ranjani–Gayatri, she has appeared in concert seasons across major Indian cities and at international festivals and cultural institutions in Asia, Europe, and North America. These performances include appearances at venues such as the Music Academy in Chennai, Shanmukhananda Sabha in Mumbai, and international platforms in London, Washington DC, Singapore, Italy, Poland, and Dhaka.

Ranjani’s musical practice encompasses both performance and composition. Along with her sister, she has set several abhangs and devotional compositions to music, particularly pieces associated with the Marathi saint tradition. These settings form a regular part of their concert repertoire and are documented in studio and live recordings. Their discography includes concert albums, curated thematic releases, and archival recordings from the annual December music season in Chennai.

In addition to performance, Ranjani is involved in pedagogy and mentoring. Through workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and long-term teaching, she contributes to the transmission of Carnatic vocal and instrumental traditions to younger generations. Her career reflects sustained engagement across multiple roles—violinist, vocalist, accompanist, composer, and educator—within the contemporary Carnatic music ecosystem.

Ranjani’s work, in association with her sister as Ranjani–Gayatri, has been recognized by cultural institutions and sabhas across India. Their honors include national and institutional awards such as the Indira Sivasailam Endowment Medal, titles from major Chennai sabhas, and, in 2026, the Padma Shri conferred by the Government of India.
