The Basant Utsav 2026 is a significant cultural landmark in Agra, continuing a long-standing tradition of welcoming spring through the spiritual and aesthetic lens of Hindustani classical music. Celebrated on February 1, 2026, at the Youth Hostel in Hari Parvat, this festival serves as an archival record of how seasonal transitions are honoured within the Indian classical arts. Unlike the more boisterous public celebrations of Holi, the Basant Utsav focuses on the "Basant" (Yellow) theme, symbolising growth and renewal. It provides a dedicated stage for exploring Ragas associated with the spring season, maintaining a sophisticated atmosphere that bridges the gap between traditional Baithak styles and modern auditorium performances.
The program’s vocal segment features Dr Ragini Sarna, a prominent exponent of the Banaras Gharana. As a senior disciple of Pandit Devashish Dey, Dr Sarna is recognised for her ability to navigate the complex "Purab Ang" of Banaras, which includes not only the rigorous Khayal but also the emotive semi-classical forms like Thumri and Dadra. Her performance is supported by the melodic mastery of Pandit Ravindra Talegaonkar on the Samvadini (Harmonium), a musician from a distinguished lineage of Agra and Gwalior traditions, and the rhythmic foundation of Shri Hariom Mahour on the Tabla. This vocal recital acts as a vital documentation of the Banaras vocal tradition’s continued vitality in the 21st century.
The instrumental highlight of the evening is a rare Guitar Vadan (Indian Classical Slide Guitar) recital by Pandit Debasis Chakroborty. A direct senior disciple of the legendary pioneer Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra, Debasis Chakroborty represents the Maihar Gharana's specialised approach to the slide guitar. His artistry is a testament to the era when the guitar was first adapted to the intricate demands of Alap, Jod, and Jhala, traditionally reserved for the Sitar or Sarod. He is accompanied by Delhi-based Tabla artist Shri Rohit Kumar, a rising presence in the classical circuit known for his balanced, supportive accompaniment. Together, they offer a historical perspective on the evolution of Indian slide guitar, preserving the innovative techniques passed down through the Guru-Shishya tradition.
The event is organised by Bhartiya Sangitalaya, Agra, an institution with a heritage dating back to 1944. Founded by Pandit Gopal Laxman Gune, the academy has been a cornerstone of musical education and preservation in North India for over eighty years. By hosting the Basant Utsav, the organisation continues its historic mission to provide a platform for maestros and senior disciples, ensuring that the nuanced traditions of Agra and the surrounding regions remain a living, breathing part of the Indian cultural archive.
