Debasis Chakroborty

Pandit Debasis Chakroborty is a preeminent virtuoso of the Indian Slide Guitar and a distinguished exponent of the Senia-Maihar Gharana. He received his primary training from his father, Shri Madhusudan Chakroborty, before coming under the tutelage of Pandit Barun Kumar Pal and Pandit Jotin Bhattacharya. His artistry reached its peak under the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara of the legendary Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra, the pioneer of the Indian Slide Guitar. Pandit Chakroborty is celebrated for his unique ability to blend both Gayaki (vocal-inspired) and Tantrakari (instrumental) styles, utilising a modified Hawaiian guitar with a three-octave range to emulate the oldest traditions of the Sitar, Sarod, and Veena.

A lifelong academician, Pandit Chakroborty has dedicated his career to the formal study and teaching of Hindustani music. He currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Mangalayatan University, Aligarh, an institution he has been associated with since its inception in 2007. His academic credentials include an M.Phil in Instrumental Music, as well as B.Mus and M.Mus degrees. Beyond teaching, he is a respected researcher who has published numerous papers in national and international journals and serves as an expert for the UGC-NET Bureau.

Pandit Chakroborty is a truly international artist, frequently travelling to the UK, USA, and Australia for performances and academic residencies. He is a regular visiting faculty member and Artist-in-Residence at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and has conducted extensive workshops and masterclasses at California State University, Fresno, USA. In the UK, he is a featured performer at the Kala Festival, regularly appearing at prestigious venues like The Bhavan in London. His collaborations extend to world music and jazz, including the "Beyond Borders and Barlines" project, which showcases his versatility on the global stage.
