Biography

Dr Ragini Sarna is an accomplished Hindustani classical vocalist primarily representing the rich musical traditions of the Banaras Gharana. As a senior disciple of the renowned vocalist Pandit Devashish Dey, she has meticulously cultivated a style that balances technical precision with deep emotional expression. Her formal training is complemented by a strong academic foundation, including a PhD and M.Mus from the Faculty of Performing Arts at Banaras Hindu University, as well as the title of Sangeet Praveen from the Prayag Sangit Samiti in Allahabad. This combination of traditional discipleship and academic rigour has established her as both a performer and a scholar in Indian classical music.

In her performances, Dr Sarna demonstrates extensive versatility, excelling in the rigorous Khayal form of classical singing as well as in semi-classical genres such as Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, and Kajari. Her mastery of the "Banaras Ang" is frequently showcased at prestigious venues and festivals across India, including notable appearances at the Assi Ghat in Varanasi and various national conferences. Recognition of her artistry includes being an 'A' Grade artist for All India Radio and Doordarshan, and receiving the 'Sur Mani' title from the Sur Singar Samsad in Mumbai. Additionally, she has contributed to the preservation and promotion of classical music through her involvement with Shilpayan, an academy dedicated to training the next generation of musicians.
