About Unbounded (Abaad)

Unbounded (Abaad) is a 2021 Indian classical music album by sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee. The album contains seven instrumental tracks and was released on September 9, 2021. The primary format of the release is digital audio.

Purbayan Chatterjee composed and performed all tracks on the album. The work explores themes of spirituality, introspection, and renewal through the framework of Hindustani classical music. Each composition integrates traditional ragas with contemporary improvisational techniques.

The tracklist includes Shanmukhapriya (The Mystic), which Chatterjee bases on the Carnatic raga Shanmukhapriya. The piece features extended alap and jor sections, followed by a rhythmic gat in teental. Sukoon (Catharsis) employs the raga Marwa to evoke a meditative atmosphere. Chatterjee structures the performance with a slow, introspective alap that gradually accelerates into a drut gat.

Khula Asmaan (Firmament) draws from the raga Yaman, emphasizing its expansive melodic contours. The composition includes a vilambit gat in jhoomra tal and a faster teental section. Intezaar (The Wait) utilizes the raga Bhairav, known for its morning associations, and incorporates a rhythmic cycle in rupak tal.

Lalitha (The Joyful Mother) is rooted in the raga Lalit, characterized by its use of both shuddha and komal re. Chatterjee performs the piece with a focus on melodic ornamentation and dynamic contrast. Unbounded (Abaad), the title track, blends elements of raga Jog and raga Khamaj, creating a fusion of devotional and romantic moods. The composition features a drut gat in ektaal.

Nayi Shuruaat (New Beginnings) concludes the album with a composition in raga Bhairavi. Chatterjee employs a medium-paced teental gat, incorporating tihai patterns to signal resolution. The album does not credit a specific record label.
