About Vibemaster
Vibemaster is an Indian classical music album by sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee. The album was released on January 1, 2002. It consists of six tracks, all of which feature extended performances of two ragas: Jog and Jaijavanti. The album presents these ragas through traditional Hindustani classical structures, including alap, jor, jhala, and compositions in varying talas.
The first four tracks explore Raga Jog. The opening track, "Raga Jog (Alap)," introduces the raga in a slow, meditative alap section. The second track, "Raga Jog (Rupak Tala)," features a composition set to Rupak Tala, a seven-beat rhythmic cycle. The third track, "Raga Jog (Medium Teental)," presents a composition in Teental, a 16-beat cycle, at a moderate tempo. The fourth track, "Raga Jog (Fast Teental)," concludes the raga's exposition with a fast-paced composition in Teental.
The final two tracks focus on Raga Jaijavanti. The fifth track, "Raga Jaijavanti (composition in Slow Teental)," includes a vilambit (slow) composition in Teental. The sixth and concluding track, "Raga Jaijavanti (composition in Medium/Fast Teental)," features drut (fast) compositions in the same tala. The album does not credit a specific record label.
Purbayan Chatterjee performs all sitar parts on the album. The release adheres to the conventions of Hindustani classical music, emphasizing improvisation and raga development within structured frameworks. The album does not include additional instrumentalists or vocalists.
