Biography

Kumar Bose was born in Kolkata into a family engaged in Indian classical music. His father, Biswanath Bose, was a tabla player and provided him with his first instruction in rhythm and percussion. His mother, Vidushi Bharati Bose, was a sitarist and a disciple of Dabir Khan and Ali Akbar Khan. She received national recognition, including the President’s Award for Best Sitar Performance in 1956 and status as an All India Radio artist. Alongside his father’s training, she introduced him to the fundamentals of classical music. His brothers are Acharya Jayanta Bose, a composer, lyricist, harmonium soloist, and singer, and Debojyoti Bose, a sarod player and music director.

After the death of his father, Kumar Bose continued his training under Pandit Kishan Maharaj of the Benares gharana. In addition to tabla, he received instruction in vocal music, harmonium, pakhawaj, khol, dhol, nal, and certain Western percussion instruments. His training placed him within the Benares gharana tradition of tabla.

Bose gave his first public performance at the age of four. By the age of fourteen, he had begun performing outside India. Over the following decades, he appeared at concert halls and cultural institutions in various countries. His performances include appearances at the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Centre in London, the Kremlin in Moscow, Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, and multiple venues across India. In 2019, he performed at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto for the Raag-Mala Music Society.

His career includes work both as a soloist and as an accompanist. He has performed with a wide range of Hindustani classical musicians, including Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, and Pandit V. G. Jog. He has also contributed to film music and served as assistant music director for Mrinal Sen’s film Genesis, with Pandit Ravi Shankar as music director. A documentary on his work, directed by Ashok Viswanathan, was produced by Doordarshan, Kolkata.

Kumar Bose’s discography includes solo and collaborative recordings such as Drums of India – Tabla Solo, Dynamic Tabla Solo, Instrumental Trio, Spirit of Freedom Concert – Pandit Ravi Shankar, Aftaab-e-Sitar – Ustad Vilayat Khan, Sitar Vadan – Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Raga Ragini – Indian Quintet, Genesis, Ravi Shankar Inside the Kremlin, and recordings issued by EMI, HMV, Ocora, Concord Records, Chhanda Dhara, and other labels. These works document his role as both soloist and accompanist in Hindustani instrumental music.

His recognitions include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2007) for Hindustani Instrumental Music (Tabla), awards from the Government of West Bengal, the Sankat Mochan Award and Vidya Vachaspati from Varanasi, and the Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award presented by Lata Mangeshkar. In 2026, he was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for his contribution to Indian classical music.
