Biography

Pandit Debojyoti Bose was born in Kolkata into a musically eminent family with a strong foundation in both percussion and melodic traditions. His father, Pandit Biswanath Bose, was a respected tabla exponent of the Benaras gharana, while his mother, Bharati Bose, was a trained sitarist who studied under Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. His initial exposure to music came through vocal and instrumental training at home, guided by his mother and elder brother, Jayanta Bose.

Recognizing his early musical promise, he undertook advanced sarod training under Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, with whom he studied intensively for over twenty-five years. This long association firmly established him within the Senia Bangash gharana, shaping his stylistic depth, tonal refinement, and compositional sensibility. He later expanded his creative scope under the same guidance, composing and directing music for films and non-fiction television projects.

A top-graded artist of All India Radio, Pandit Bose has received several prestigious awards, including the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Scholarship, the Kal-ke-Kalakar Award at Banaras Hindu University, and the Anandalok Award. His concert career spans major Indian festivals such as Dover Lane, Saptak, and Tansen Samaroh, alongside international performances across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, China, and other countries. As an empanelled cultural ambassador with ICCR, he has represented Indian classical music globally.

Beyond performance, Pandit Bose is deeply invested in pedagogy and orchestral initiatives. He has collaborated with leading tabla artists such as Pandit Abhijit Banerjee and played a central role in projects like the National Youth Orchestra and Bharatiya Vadya Jhankar workshops conducted nationwide. His disciples, including sarodist Monit Pal and percussionist Rohen Bose, have appeared on prominent national and international stages, reflecting his enduring contribution to nurturing the next generation of Indian classical musicians.
