Biography

Ali Akbar Khan was a towering sarod maestro whose life and work transformed the global presence of Hindustani classical music. Born on 14 April 1922 in Shibpur (present-day Bangladesh), he was the son and foremost disciple of Ustad Allauddin Khan, founder of the Maihar gharana. Raised in the rigorous gurukul tradition at Maihar, Ali Akbar Khan underwent extraordinarily intense training, studying vocal music, sarod, tabla, and pakhavaj, with daily practice often extending for many hours. This discipline shaped his deep understanding of raga structure, rhythm, and tonal precision.

He made his public debut at the age of thirteen and soon gained recognition through performances on All India Radio and at major music conferences. Alongside fellow disciple Ravi Shankar, he became part of historic jugalbandis that are now regarded as milestones in Indian classical music. His sarod playing was noted for its depth, emotional gravity, and architectural clarity, qualities that set new standards for instrumental performance.

Ali Akbar Khan was also an important composer, creating new ragas such as Chandranandan and composing music for Indian and international films, including works by Satyajit Ray and Bernardo Bertolucci. In 1956, he founded the Ali Akbar College of Music in Calcutta and later established its international center in California, with additional branches in Europe. Through these institutions, he trained hundreds of students and ensured systematic transmission of the Maihar tradition.

From the 1950s onward, he toured extensively across Europe and the United States, becoming one of the first Indian classical musicians to record LPs in the West and appear on American television. His collaborations with Western musicians and his participation in landmark events such as the Concert for Bangladesh further expanded his influence.

Awarded the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, MacArthur Fellowship, and multiple Grammy nominations, Ali Akbar Khan remains a defining force in Indian classical music. His artistry, teaching, and recordings continue to inspire musicians and listeners worldwide
