Biography
Gayatri Asokan is a versatile Indian singer whose career spans playback singing, classical music, ghazals, and devotional repertoire. Born in Thrissur, Kerala, into an academically inclined family of doctors, Dr P. U. Asokan and Dr K. S. Sunidhy, she inherited a profound musical lineage through her mother and grandmother, who were both steeped in the Carnatic tradition. While she pursued her degree in English Literature at Vimala College, her musical destiny was already manifesting; by the fourth grade, she had earned her first professional check of 105 Rupees for an All India Radio recording, a symbolic start to a lifelong journey in sound. Her initial grounding was in Carnatic music under the guidance of Sri Mangat Natesan and Sri Vamanan Namboodiri, and later under Nedumangad Sasidharan Nair, which established a strong foundation in classical discipline, voice culture, and traditional repertoire.
She later expanded her musical training into Hindustani Classical Music, marking what she describes as a "paradigm shift" in her artistry. Studying under Dr Alka Deo Marulkar in Pune and subsequently under Pandit Vinayaka Torvi in Bengaluru within the rigorous Kirana Gharana tradition, she mastered the art of "Vilambit Khayal," a slow-tempo meditative style rare in the Carnatic system. This was further refined by her studies in the "Thumri" and "Ghazal Gayaki" styles under Vidushi Shubha Joshi and Pandit Ajay Pohankar, allowing her to capture the delicate "tehzeeb" (etiquette) of North Indian music. This dual training enabled her to move fluidly between Carnatic and Hindustani traditions, a versatility that is reflected in both her concert performances and recorded work.
Gayatri Asokan made her playback debut in Malayalam cinema with the song “Deena Dayalo Rama,” composed by Raveendran, performing alongside the legendary K. J. Yesudas. The industry immediately recognised her as a "thinking singer," capable of blending technical precision with raw emotional weight. Her expressive singing soon brought her critical acclaim, culminating in the Kerala State Film Award for Best Singer for the song “Enthe Nee Kanna” from the film Sasneham Sumitra. Notable ghazal veteran Talat Aziz once observed her rise, stating:
"It is truly remarkable how these artists from the South, like Gayatri, have so authentically internalised the soul and nuances of the Ghazal. She doesn't just sing the notes; she inhabits the poetry."
Over the years, she has sung hundreds of film songs across multiple South Indian languages and collaborated with leading composers, including Maestro Ilayaraja (for Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal), Vidyasagar, and Johnson. In addition to film music, she has maintained a strong presence in classical and devotional music, releasing albums for prominent labels and institutions, including the Art of Living Foundation and Sony Music. Her spiritual albums, such as Sankirtan and Vishuddhi, have become staples in households across the country, showcasing her ability to render bhajans with a classical gravitas.
Since 2017, she has gradually stepped away from regular film playback to focus more deeply on ghazals and classical-based presentations. This transition was cemented with her 2017 album Ghazal Gaze and reached a new creative peak in 2025 with the launch of "Dil Ke Behlane Ki," her debut as a composer at the iconic Khazana Festival in Mumbai. This work, set to the poetry of Shakeel Badayuni, was hailed by critics as a "perfect bridge between tradition and freshness". She has also been actively involved in music-related television programming as a jury member and anchor, most notably hosting Khayal on MediaOne, where she introduced a generation of viewers to the aesthetics of Hindustani music.
Her personal and professional life saw a major union in 2016 when she married the internationally acclaimed Sitar maestro Purbayan Chatterjee. Together, they have explored the frontiers of Global Fusion, performing at prestigious venues ranging from the Shanghai World Music Festival to London’s Wembley Stadium. Her collaborations with global artists, such as Amsterdam-based tabla player Heiko Dijker, and her participation in the "Unbounded (Abaad)" project alongside Ustad Zakir Hussain and Shankar Mahadevan have established her as a global ambassador of the Indian vocal tradition.
With a career rooted in classical training and enriched by diverse performance experiences, Gayatri Asokan continues to be recognised for her musical integrity, adaptability, and contribution to Indian vocal music. As a leading critic for The New Indian Express noted,
"Gayatri is that rare artist who chose meaning over mainstream fame, trading the ephemeral spotlight of playback for the eternal depth of the Ghazal."
