Biography
Taufiq Qureshi was born in Mumbai and surrounded by rhythm from an early age because he belongs to the musical family of the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Alla Rakha and was influenced by his elder brother, Ustad Zakir Hussain. He began performing in his twenties, forming the world-music ensemble Surya in the late 1980s. His music blends classical percussion techniques with new rhythmic ideas inspired by different cultures around the world.
Djembe, duff, bongos, and vocal-body percussion are Quershi's trademark style, blending to create unique rhythmic motifs that have become influential in modern fusion music. He has collaborated with major artists and performed at renowned international festivals, and his albums, such as RhyDhun, remain benchmarks for world-music experiments.
His contributions extend to Indian cinema, where his rhythmic arrangements have enhanced award-winning film scores and popular soundtracks. He is recognized with international honors, including gold awards at the Cannes Ad Film Festival and the London International Awards, and also Qureshi is shaping emerging talent as a mentor and teacher.
