Biography
Ustad Rashid Khan (1968–2024) was a leading Hindustani classical vocalist of the Rampur–Sahaswan gharana, widely regarded as a defining voice of contemporary khayal singing. Born in Sahaswan, Uttar Pradesh, he belonged to a distinguished musical lineage and was the great-grandson of Inayat Hussain Khan, the founder of the gharana. His early training began under his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan, whose strict discipline and emphasis on swar sadhana shaped Rashid Khan’s musical foundation.
Initially indifferent to music, his innate talent was recognised by his family, and he underwent intensive voice training from a young age. His formal musical journey gained momentum when he joined the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata as a teenager, where he later became a recognised scholar-musician and served as a member of the teaching faculty.
Musically, Rashid Khan’s gayaki was rooted in the Rampur–Sahaswan tradition, known for its strong voice projection, measured tempos, and rhythmic intricacy. He was particularly admired for his expansive vilambit khayals, nuanced use of sargam and taankari, and emotionally charged melodic development. While influenced by great masters such as Amir Khan and Bhimsen Joshi, he consciously avoided imitation and evolved a style that was distinctly his own.
Beyond classical performances, he explored carefully chosen experiments, including Sufi-inspired recordings and collaborations across genres, while maintaining the core integrity of Hindustani music. He also performed jugalbandis with leading instrumentalists, expanding his musical dialogue without diluting tradition.
Rashid Khan enjoyed rare popularity for a classical vocalist of his time, performing to full auditoriums and maintaining a demanding concert schedule. Alongside his classical legacy, he contributed to film music through select playback and recording projects.
He received several major honours, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri, and Padma Bhushan, acknowledging his lasting contribution to Indian classical music. His passing in January 2024 marked the loss of a deeply respected artist whose voice bridged classical rigor and emotional accessibility.
