Presented as part of Darbar Festival 2026, this unique concert brings together two contrasting yet deeply connected expressions of Hindustani classical music. The evening opens with a tabla solo recital by Ustad Shahbaz Hussain, one of the foremost tabla maestros of his generation. Drawing from the rich rhythmic traditions of the Delhi and Punjab gharanas, his performance highlights the tabla as a solo concert instrument, exploring intricate compositions, improvisation, and rhythmic architecture. He is accompanied by Farooque Latif Khan on sarangi nagma, providing the melodic framework for the recital.
Following an interval, the focus shifts to the expressive world of khayal vocal music with acclaimed vocalist Sunanda Sharma. A disciple of the legendary Girija Devi, Sunanda Sharma's artistry reflects the depth of the Banaras gharana while retaining the lyrical and folk-inspired influences of North India. Supported by an accomplished ensemble featuring Ajay Joglekar (Harmonium), Farooque Latif Khan (Sarangi), and Rupak Bhattacharjee (Tabla), she presents a performance that combines classical sophistication with emotional depth.
Together, these two performances offer audiences an immersive journey through melody, rhythm, improvisation, and tradition, highlighting the diversity and richness of Hindustani classical music.
