Biography

Pandit Ramdas Palsule was born in Pune into an academically inclined family. His father, Dr. G. B. Palsule, was a noted Sanskrit scholar and recipient of several national awards. Ramdas studied at Jnana Prabodhini and the College of Engineering, Pune (COEP), and was introduced to the tabla during his school years by Pt. G. L. Samant. After completing a degree in mechanical engineering, he chose to pursue music professionally at the age of twenty-three and became a disciple of Pt. Suresh Talwalkar.

As a performer, he developed a personal approach to traditional compositions, with particular focus on Jod-Taal and Jaati-Bhed. His style is characterized by clarity of structure and a contemporary perspective within classical grammar. He has worked with a wide range of leading artists across vocal, instrumental, and dance traditions, including Pandit Jasraj, Vidushi Prabha Atre, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Begum Parveen Sultana, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Vidwan M. Balamuralikrishna, and Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan.

His solo appearances include platforms such as the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, Saptak Festival, Tansen Mahotsav, Kalidas Festival, All Bengal Festival, and the Barsi of Ustad Alla Rakha in 2018. He has also performed for SPIC MACAY and at national conferences of All India Radio.

Since 1995, he has served as a guru at the Lalit Kala Kendra, University of Pune, and since 2008 at the Bharati Vidyapeeth School of Performing Arts. He is a founding member and guru at Avartan Gurukul in Pune. His students include performers based in India and internationally. He has been empanelled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) since 1988 and has been a committee member of the Cultural Functions and Production Grant Scheme (CFPGS), Ministry of Culture, since 2018.

Beyond performance and teaching, Palsule has been involved in cultural organizations and social initiatives. Since 2001, he has organized annual blood donation camps in Pune and has participated in fundraising efforts for musicians and instrument makers affected by crises. He has also curated and facilitated Hindustani classical concerts in North America and Europe, contributing to the international circulation of the tradition.
