Biography

Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar is celebrated internationally as a pioneering tabla exponent whose help to connect bridges generations, traditions, and music disciplines. He grew up in a family where Keertan - was an important tradition, so he learned the values of rhythm and classical music from a young age. Their mix of knowledge helped him develop a style that is both creative and thoughtful, with a wide understanding sense and his training also brought together the styles of Benares and Pune, and he also studied Carnatic rhythm.

 

Over the years, he has performed with many great maestros of Hindustani classical music. Pt. Gajananbuva Joshi and Pt. Nivruttibuva Sarnaik played a major role in guiding his musical understanding and respect for tradition. Along with accompanying senior artists, he has also built a strong reputation as a tabla soloist. His creative approach to rhythm can be seen in performances like Taal Mala, Taal Yatra, and Joad Taal, which are well appreciated by both knowledgeable listeners and general audiences.

 

Along with performing, he is also respected as a composer and for working closely with other musicians. His music has inspired artists in India and in many other countries, including those in jazz and world-music traditions. As a teacher, he has trained several well-known tabla players such as Vijay Ghate, Ramdas Palsule, Charudatta Phadke, and his son Satyajit Talwalkar. He has also guided leading Kathak dancers like Shama Bhate and many of her students.

 

His work has been honoured with major awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the title “Taalyogi.” Even today, he travels to different parts of the world for concerts, workshops, and lectures, continuing to share his knowledge and carry forward the Guru-Shishya tradition with great commitment.
