Biography
Hariprasad Chaurasia is internationally recognized for his contribution to Indian classical music through the bansuri. After early training in vocal music, he pursued flute under Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi and later received advanced guidance from Annapurna Devi, which shaped his approach to raga and melodic structure. Chaurasia worked with All India Radio from the late 1950s, building a parallel career as a performer and composer.
Alongside classical performances, he formed the duo Shiv–Hari with Shivkumar Sharma, composing music for notable Hindi films such as Silsila and Chandni. He has collaborated with Western musicians, including John McLaughlin and George Harrison, and participated in landmark recordings. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, Chaurasia has also contributed to pedagogy through the Vrindavan Gurukul and serves as an artistic director at the Rotterdam Music Conservatory.
