Chandigarh

Chandigarh is a union territory and planned city in northern India that serves as the joint capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. Designed by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in the 1950s, the city emerged as a modernist urban experiment following India’s partition in 1947. The Master Plan of Chandigarh divided the city into rectangular sectors, each functioning as a self-sufficient unit with residential, commercial, and green spaces. In contemporary classical music, Chandigarh-based artists such as vocalist Rajan and Sajan Misra have performed at local venues like the Chandigarh Club and Punjab University Auditorium. The 2022 release Ragas of the Valley, a collaborative album by flute player Ronu Majumdar and santoor player Tarun Bhattacharya, featured live recordings from a Chandigarh concert. The album included renditions of raga Bhairav and Kafi under the Saregama label. The city’s Pracheen Kala Kendra, founded in 1956, offers formal training in Hindustani and Carnatic music, with alumni including tabla player Anurag Sharma, who released the instructional DVD Taals of North India in 2010.

Chandigarh’s role in Indian classical music extends to its educational infrastructure. The Department of Indian Theatre at Panjab University conducts research on folk and classical traditions, while the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi organizes the Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan, one of North India’s oldest music festivals.
