Sanjay Deshpande

Sanjay Deshpande is a Hindustani classical tabla player with a strong grounding in traditional gharana training. He was introduced to tabla in his early years under the guidance of the late Pt. Sabade at Bharat Gayan Samaj, Pune. He later received advanced taleem from renowned tabla maestro Pt. Suresh Talwalkar of the Delhi–Farukhabad gharana in the guru-shishya parampara. His exposure to the Punjab gharana came through guidance from the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha Khan. He has also received musical direction from Shri Yogesh Samsi and Pt. Vivek Joshi.

Sanjay Deshpande is a recipient of the Ahmedjan Thirakwa Scholarship for tabla solo performance, recognizing his potential and dedication to the art form. Over the years, he has accompanied leading Hindustani musicians such as Pt. Jasraj, Dr. Prabha Atre, Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar, Smt. Malini Rajurkar, Dr. Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande, and others. His accompaniment is valued for its sensitivity, clarity of bols, and strong laya control.

He has performed at major music conferences, including the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival (Pune), ITC Sangeet Sammelan, Shankarlal Samaroha (New Delhi), and the Dover Lane Music Conference (Kolkata). Internationally, Sanjay Deshpande has presented concerts across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia and has participated in the World Vocal Festival in Sweden.

Apart from performing, he is empanelled as a guru at Lalit Kala Kendra, University of Pune. He has contributed to several recordings, including the fusion album Wind From Ayuta with Korean musicians, which received a Best Album award in South Korea in 2002.

Through performance, teaching, and recordings, Sanjay Deshpande continues to contribute to the evolving landscape of Hindustani tabla performance.
