Ashwini Bhide Deshpande

Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande is a Hindustani classical vocalist belonging to the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, a tradition known for its structured approach to raga development and composition. Born in Mumbai, she was introduced to classical music within a family environment rooted in musical practice. Her initial training was under Narayanrao Datar, after which she continued her musical development under her mother, Manik Bhide, who was a disciple of Gaansaraswati Kishori Amonkar. She later received guidance from Ratnakar Pai until his passing in 2009.

In parallel with her music training, Bhide-Deshpande pursued formal education in the sciences, completing advanced academic degrees while continuing her musical practice. Her performance career includes concerts across India as well as international appearances, including performances in North America. She is known for her work in khayal and for presenting carefully structured bandishes rooted in the Jaipur-Atrauli style.

Beyond performance, she has made notable contributions as a composer and scholar. Her published works, Raag Rachananjali (2004) and Ragarachananjali 2 (2010), document a substantial body of her bandish compositions and reflect her engagement with raga-based composition. She has also worked extensively with devotional repertoire, including bhajans. In recognition of her sustained contribution to Indian classical music, Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande received the Padma Shri award in 2025.
