About Sangit Mahabharati
Founded in 1956 in Mumbai by Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, Sangit Mahabharati was conceived as a center for systematic and comprehensive training in Indian classical music and dance. The institution was established to bring music in its pure form to a wider public through structured pedagogy, documentation, and research. Over the decades, it has evolved towards functioning as a music conservatory model within India.
In addition to regular instruction, SMB organizes annual music festivals, periodic recitals, lecture-demonstrations, and music appreciation sessions. These programs feature established artists, musicologists, and experts from related disciplines and are open to the public in Mumbai.
Under the principalship of Pandit Nayan Ghosh, the institution has continued its educational and outreach initiatives. Sangit Mahabharati has received recognition and support from state and Central Government bodies, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, and the Bombay Municipal Corporation, along with support from charitable trusts and organisations.
Sangit Mahabharati is a registered public trust. Donations made to the institution qualify for income tax exemption under Section 80-G.
