Sangeet Natak Akademi

The Sangeet Natak Akademi operates to develop, preserve, and advance India’s traditions of dance, drama, and music. It serves as a coordinating body for State and regional academies, fostering cooperation across institutions and encouraging the exchange of ideas and techniques between different parts of the country.

A central focus of the Akademi is research and documentation. It supports the study of Indian performing arts by maintaining libraries, archives, and museums, and by publishing reference works and literature, including technical handbooks and dictionaries. It also encourages the establishment of training institutions for theater and performance, covering areas such as acting, stagecraft, and production.

The Akademi plays an active role in nurturing performance practice. It sponsors national and regional festivals, seminars, and conferences; supports the production of new works; and promotes amateur theatre, children’s theatre, and open-air and rural performance traditions. Special emphasis is placed on the revival and preservation of folk dance, folk music, and folk drama across regions.

Recognition forms a key part of its mission. The Akademi awards prizes and distinctions to individual artists and organisations for outstanding achievement in dance, drama, and music, particularly in areas where no state-level bodies exist. It also works to maintain educational standards in the performing arts by supporting research in pedagogy and curriculum development.

Through national coordination, institutional support, international cultural exchange, and long-term documentation, the Sangeet Natak Akademi functions as a foundational body in India’s performing arts landscape, ensuring continuity, quality, and access across generations and regions.
