Anoushka is the debut studio album by Indian sitarist and composer Anoushka Shankar, released on October 20, 1998. The album marked her first major recording as a solo artist and established her presence in the North Indian classical music tradition. Produced under the Angel Records label, the release showcased Shankar’s training under her father, sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, while incorporating her interpretive approach to raga-based compositions.

The album comprises five tracks, each rooted in classical Hindustani raga forms. Bairagi opens the recording with an alap in Raga Bairagi, followed by a structured gat in teental. Tilak Shyam explores Raga Tilak Shyam through a slow, meditative development, emphasizing the sitar’s melodic depth. Kirwani presents a rendition of the eponymous raga, characterized by its pentatonic scale and emotive phrasing. Charukeshi follows with a lighter, more rhythmic interpretation, while First Love (Pratham Prem) concludes the album with a fusion-oriented piece, blending sitar with Western harmonic elements.

Shankar performed all sitar parts and collaborated with accompanying artists, including Tanmoy Bose on tabla and Bikram Ghosh on percussion. The production retained traditional acoustic recording techniques, avoiding electronic processing to preserve the organic texture of the instruments. The album’s liner notes included commentary from Ravi Shankar, who described his daughter’s performance as a continuation of the Maihar gharana lineage.

Critical reception highlighted Shankar’s technical precision and emotional expressiveness, with particular note given to her improvisational skills in Kirwani and Charukeshi. The album’s release coincided with her emerging international profile, including performances at venues such as the BBC Proms and the Concertgebouw. While commercial sales figures remain undisclosed, Anoushka served as a foundational work in her discography, preceding later experimental and cross-genre projects.

The original release appeared in CD format, with subsequent digital distributions retaining the 1998 tracklist. No alternate editions or remixes have been officially documented. The album’s cover art featured a portrait of Shankar with her sitar, photographed by Autumn de Wilde.
