Rampur-Sahaswan

The Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana is a distinguished lineage of Hindustani classical music that originated in the royal courts of North Uttar Pradesh, centered in the towns of Rampur and Sahaswan. The gharana finds its origins in Mehboob Khan, the chief Vocal singer in the royal court of Rampur State, whose tradition was followed by his son Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan (1849-1919), who is regarded as the founder of the gharana. The gharana was subsequently developed by Inayat's brothers-in-law, including Haider Khan (1857-1927), Ustad Fida Hussain Khan, and Padma Bhushan Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan (1878-1964), the first recipient of the Padma Bhushan Award in music. The gharana takes its name from Sahaswan, the ancestral place of these musicians in present-day Badaun district.

The Rampur-Sahaswan gayaki is closely related to the Gwalior Gharana and is characterized by medium-slow tempos, a full-throated voice, and intricate rhythmic play. The gharana places great importance on singing in aakar (using vowel sounds) and emphasizes the use of the natural voice. The preferred tempo is madhya laya (medium tempo), while the use of very slow tempo is generally discouraged in favor of a more dynamic approach. The literary content of the bandish receives significant attention, with clear pronunciation and meaningful interpretation of the text being essential components of the style.

The specialty of the Rampur-Sahaswan school lies in its distinctive tans (rapid melodic passages), which cover a much larger range than those of other gharanas and are marked by their speed, boldness, and crystalline clarity. These tans are employed strategically to bring out layakari (rhythmic variation and play), demonstrating the gharana's sophisticated approach to rhythm. Among the most celebrated vocalists of this tradition are Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan, Pandit Ghulam Mustafa Khan (1931-2021), Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan, and the late Ustad Rashid Khan, who was the great-grandson of the gharana's founder Inayat Hussain Khan.

Pandit Ghulam Mustafa Khan, son and disciple of Waris Hussain Khan who also learned from his father-in-law Mushtaq Hussain Khan, was known for his exceptionally melodious and sensitively adaptable voice. His music exemplified the rigorous traditional training characteristic of the gharana, combining technical brilliance with profound musical wisdom. Rashid Khan, who began his intensive grooming under Ustad Nisar Husain Khan as early as 1972, carried the gharana tradition into the 21st century with performances that showcased both the classical purity and contemporary relevance of the Rampur-Sahaswan style.
