Nisar Hussain Khan

Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan was a prominent 20th-century Hindustani classical vocalist representing the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, a tradition noted for its emphasis on voice culture, clarity of swara, and intricate rhythmic work. Born in 1906 into a family of musicians, he received his training from his father and guru, Fida Hussain Khan, inheriting a large and diverse repertoire of classical compositions.

He began performing at a young age, and his first public performance at around eleven years old was regarded as exceptional. The Maharaja of Baroda, Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, recognized his potential and granted him a scholarship, also appointing his father to further guide his training. By the age of eighteen, Nisar Hussain Khan himself was appointed a court musician at Baroda, a role he maintained for nearly three decades.

By the 1940s, he had established himself on the national concert circuit and become a regular artist on All India Radio. His singing was marked by a deep, resonant voice developed through sustained training. His khayal presentations featured gamak, bol-taan, and sargam patterns, while his taranas were particularly admired for their precision and vitality. He is widely remembered as a specialist in the tarana form.

As a guru, he contributed significantly to the continuation of the gharana. Among his most notable disciples were Ghulam Mustafa Khan and his grandnephew Rashid Khan. He trained Rashid Khan in the traditional guru-shishya manner at his home in Badaun and later at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, where he spent his final years.

His gharana lineage traces through important figures such as Inayat Hussain Khan, Fida Hussain Khan, and Mushtaq Hussain Khan, placing him within a respected vocal tradition.

He received major national honors, including

His recorded legacy includes numerous 78-rpm, EP, and LP releases on labels such as His Master’s Voice and Odeon Records, featuring ragas like Todi, Kedar, Multani, Malkauns, Lalit, Basant, and Jaijaiwanti, along with several tarana renditions.

Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan is remembered as a major representative of the Rampur–Sahaswan style whose influence continues through his disciples, recordings, and the enduring popularity of his tarana singing.
