The Mehfil Space series returns to The Rose Hill for its second year, celebrating high-quality music from South Asia. For this special event, The Mehfil Space welcomes classical vocalist Muslim Shaggan from Lahore, performing his popular ghazal “Ambwa” along with a selection of classical and semi-classical works.
Muslim Shaggan belongs to the Gwalior gharana and has trained from a young age under his grandfather Ustad Ghulam Hassan Shaggan and his uncle Ustad Qadir Ali Shaggan. His music centres on khayal, but he is also known for his performances of ghazal, thumri, kafi, and Sufi kalam, reflecting a broad and expressive vocal style.
His singing draws from centuries-old classical traditions while remaining fresh and relatable for today’s listeners. Performing with tanpura and harmonium, he brings out the emotional depth and subtle beauty of each composition.
His recent UK appearances include a performance at the Houses of Parliament. His album Asar was praised by Songlines Magazine, which featured one of its tracks in their “Top of the World” selection.
The word mehfil describes a small, intimate musical gathering where artists and audience share the experience closely. Guided by curator Atiya Gourlay, The Mehfil Space creates this welcoming environment — presented in partnership with The Rose Hill and Zeroclassikal — where every performance becomes a shared musical journey.
