Biography

Vijay Ghate began learning tabla at the age of three in Jabalpur. He later moved to Mumbai, where he underwent over twelve years of intensive training under Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar. His development within this lineage shaped his approach to both accompaniment and solo performance.

He was personally chosen by his guru to represent him in concerts and has since accompanied leading figures of Hindustani classical music, including Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Kaushiki Chakraborty, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. In the field of dance, he has worked with Kathak exponents such as Pandit Birju Maharaj and Nandkishore Kapote.

Ghate has also participated in cross-genre collaborations, including projects with jazz guitarist Larry Coryell and saxophonist George Brooks, reflecting an engagement beyond conventional classical settings.

In addition to performance, he is one of the initiators of TaalChakra, a music festival created to provide a platform for young and emerging musicians. The festival brings together artists from different musical backgrounds and focuses on exposure and opportunity for new talent.
