Bahadur Khan

Ustad Bahadur Khan (born Bahadur Hossain Khan; 19 January 1931 – 3 October 1989) was an Indian sarod player and composer associated with the Maihar gharana, one of the most influential lineages in Hindustani instrumental music.

Born in Shibpur, Brahmanbaria (now in Bangladesh), he belonged to a deeply rooted musical family. He was the son of the classical musician Ayet Ali Khan and received his early training from his father before continuing under the guidance of his uncle, the legendary Alauddin Khan, in Maihar. This formative training shaped his command over raga development, tonal clarity, and the meditative alap style characteristic of the Maihar tradition.

He was related to sitar maestro Ravi Shankar and worked closely within a circle that included sarod virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan and surbahar exponent Annapurna Devi. In addition to instrumental training, he also studied vocal music, which informed his melodic approach on the sarod.

Bahadur Khan maintained a strong presence on All India Radio, Radio Pakistan, and Radio Bangladesh, where his performances reached wide audiences. Beyond the classical stage, he played a meaningful role in Indian parallel cinema. He composed and directed music for several films by Ritwik Ghatak, including Meghe Dhaka Tara, Komal Gandhar, and Subarnarekha, and contributed to other films such as Garm Hava (1973). His film work is noted for integrating classical idioms into cinematic narrative without diluting their depth.

As a teacher, he was respected for his methodical and traditional approach. He served for a period on the faculty of the Ali Akbar College of Music in California, helping introduce Hindustani classical music to international students. Among his known disciples is sarod player Tejendra Narayan Majumdar. His sons, including sarod player Bidyut Khan and sitarist Kirit Khan, also carried forward the family’s musical involvement.

He passed away in Calcutta in 1989. His memory continues to be observed through annual commemorative concerts in Kolkata organized by the Ustad Bahadur Khan Music Circle, while his family’s broader musical heritage is preserved in Bangladesh through institutions dedicated to his father, Ayet Ali Khan.

In essence, Ustad Bahadur Khan is remembered as a musician who bridged rigorous Maihar gharana classicism with broadcast media and serious cinema while sustaining a teaching legacy that extended beyond India.
