About
Biography
Annapurna Devi was an extraordinary custodian of Hindustani classical music whose influence far exceeded her limited public appearances. Born Roshanara Khan on 17 April 1927 in Maihar, she was the daughter of the legendary Ustad Allauddin Khan, founder of the Senia–Maihar gharana. From an early age, she displayed exceptional musical ability, prompting her father to initiate her into rigorous vocal training. Following a medical condition that affected her voice, he guided her toward instrumental music, initially training her on the sitar before entrusting her with the surbahar to preserve the complex Wazirkhani beenkari tradition.
Under her father’s uncompromising discipline, Annapurna Devi mastered raga development, voice-like phrasing, and deep alap exposition. Though capable of commanding concert stages, she remained deeply uncomfortable with professional performance and recording, believing music to be a sacred pursuit rather than a commercial one. Apart from a few early concerts and rare duet performances with Pandit Ravi Shankar between 1946 and 1957, she withdrew almost entirely from the public eye.
Her greatest legacy lies in her role as a guru. After Ustad Allauddin Khan’s passing, Annapurna Devi became a guiding force of the gharana, mentoring some of the most important musicians of modern times. Her students included sitarists Nikhil Banerjee and Kartik Kumar, sarod maestros Aashish Khan and Bahadur Khan, and flautists Hariprasad Chaurasia and Nityanand Haldipur. She taught without accepting fees, adhering strictly to her father’s ideals of selfless transmission of knowledge.
Despite her reclusive nature, her contribution was formally recognised with the Padma Bhushan, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Fellowship, and the Desikottama honorary doctorate. Annapurna Devi passed away in Mumbai on 13 October 2018. Revered for her purity, discipline, and devotion to tradition, she remains a towering yet quiet presence in the history of Indian classical music.
