Biography

Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar is a significant contributor to the sarod repertoire, carrying forward the legacy of the Senia Maihar gharana with intellectual precision, technical virtuosity, and an emotive musicality. Born on 17 May 1961, he first learned music at home, guided by his grandfather Bibhuti Ranjan Majumdar and later by his father, Ranjan Majumdar. He studied vocal music and tabla with Pandit Amaresh Chowdhury and Anil Palit, along with family training. These early lessons helped him develop a strong sense of melody and rhythm, giving him a solid foundation for his future as a sarod player.

Majumdar has been honored with major accolades, including the President's Gold Medal in 1981, the ITC SRA Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018, and the Padma Shri in 2025. His career spans leading classical festivals across India, Europe, North America, and Asia, including notable collaborative performances with leading musicians of the contemporary era.

He has contributed significantly as a composer, writing for films, telefilms, and vocal projects, and engaging in experimental and cross-genre collaborations. He also teaches through workshops and lecture-demonstrations, encouraging and guiding the next generation of sarod players.
