Biography
Ustad Aashish Khan was one of the most respected sarod players of Indian classical music and a leading figure of the Senia Maihar Gharana. Born in Maihar, he grew up in a deeply musical environment shaped by his grandfather, Ustad Allauddin Khan, the founder of the Maihar tradition. He was initiated into music at a very young age and later received rigorous training under his father, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and his aunt, Annapurna Devi. This rare lineage placed him among the most richly trained musicians of his generation.
He gave his first major public performances in childhood and soon became known for his elegance, depth, and sensitivity on stage. His sarod playing reflected both the power of tradition and a personal voice marked by clarity and emotion. He performed widely across India and abroad, appearing at leading festivals and concert halls in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Aashish Khan played a significant role in introducing Indian classical music to global audiences. He collaborated with legendary artists such as Ravi Shankar, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Charles Lloyd, Alice Coltrane, and Ustad Zakir Hussain. He was a founding member of the Indo-American ensemble Shanti and later formed fusion groups that explored new musical spaces while remaining rooted in classical values.
His music reached the cinema and theater as well. Under Ravi Shankar’s direction, he performed on soundtracks for landmark films, and he composed music for notable Indian productions. In addition, he served as composer and conductor for All India Radio’s Vadya Vrinda ensemble, contributing to orchestral experiments within the classical framework.
Beyond performance, Aashish Khan was a devoted teacher. He served as an adjunct professor at institutions such as the California Institute of the Arts and the University of California, Santa Cruz, and taught at the Ali Akbar College of Music and other universities. He later established the Aashish Khan School of World Music in Kolkata, creating a bridge between tradition and contemporary learning.
His achievements include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, international fellowships, and a Grammy nomination for Golden Strings of the Sarode. Through decades of performance, collaboration, and teaching, Ustad Aashish Khan left a lasting legacy, carrying the voice of the sarod and the spirit of Indian classical music across generations and continents.
