Nasik

Nasik (also spelled Nashik) is a city in the northern region of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Situated on the banks of the Godavari River, Nasik serves as a significant cultural and religious center in western India. The city hosts the Kumbh Mela, a major Hindu pilgrimage and festival, every 12 years at Trimbakeshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Shiva. Nasik’s historical prominence dates to ancient texts, including the Ramayana, which associates the city with the exile of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana.

The city’s musical heritage intersects with Indian classical traditions through local institutions and artists. The Nasik School of Music, established in the mid-20th century, contributed to the propagation of Hindustani classical music in the region. Notable figures include vocalist Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki (1929–1998), a resident of Nasik during his formative years, whose compositions in natya sangeet (Marathi musical theatre) and khayal gained recognition. His 1972 LP Rag Bhairav: Alap, Jor & Jhala, released by HMV, features an extended exploration of the raga and remains a reference recording for the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana style he represented.

Nasik’s role in Marathi bhavgeet (devotional and poetic songs) is evident through artists like Lata Mangeshkar, who recorded several tracks in the city’s studios during the 1960s and 1970s. The 1963 album Mazya Navryachi Bayko, produced by Doordarshan Nasik, includes her renditions of compositions by Sudhir Phadke, blending folk and classical elements. The city’s Gandharva Mahavidyalaya branch, affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, offers formal training in Hindustani vocal and instrumental music, with an emphasis on the sitar and tabla.

Contemporary contributions include the annual Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav satellite events held in Nasik, featuring performances by artists such as Ustad Shahid Parvez (sitar) and Pt. Satish Vyas (santoor). The 2018 edition at Kalidas Kala Mandir showcased a jugalbandi between Parvez and Pt. Anindo Chatterjee (tabla), released as a live recording by Saregama in 2019. Local labels like Rajhans Records have archived regional classical and semi-classical works, though comprehensive discographical data for Nasik-specific releases remains fragmented.

The city’s acoustic environment influences performances, with venues such as the Town Hall Nasik and Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium hosting recitals during the winter sangeet sammelans (music conferences). Nasik’s proximity to the Saptashrungi Gad mountain range also inspires folk-classical fusions, particularly in lavani and powada traditions.
