Dharwad

Dharwad is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. The city serves as the administrative headquarters of the Dharwad district. Dharwad lies in the northwestern part of Karnataka and forms a contiguous urban area with the city of Hubballi, collectively known as Hubballi-Dharwad. The region has a documented history dating back to the 12th century and has been a center of cultural and educational activity in Karnataka.

Dharwad holds significance in the development of Indian classical music, particularly the Kirana gharana of Hindustani classical music. The city became a hub for musicians and scholars in the 19th and 20th centuries. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, a prominent exponent of the Kirana gharana, settled in Dharwad in the early 20th century. His presence attracted students and practitioners, fostering a musical ecosystem that influenced subsequent generations of artists.
