About Music Academy Madras

The Academy is internationally known for organizing the Madras Music Season, a month-long festival held every December during the Margazhi season, featuring leading Carnatic musicians, dancers, and scholars. The festival includes concerts, lecture demonstrations, panel discussions, and talent showcases, making it one of the largest cultural gatherings dedicated to classical music in the world.

In addition to concerts, the institution also serves as an important educational and research centre. It runs the Teachers College of Carnatic Music and the Advanced School of Carnatic Music, offering formal training in vocal music and instruments such as violin and mridangam. The Music Academy Research Centre (MARC) publishes the long-running Journal of the Music Academy, which documents research on ragas, compositions, musicology, and performance traditions.

The Academy also confers several prestigious honours recognizing excellence in the performing arts. Among them, the Sangita Kalanidhi title is considered the highest distinction in Carnatic music. Through festivals, education programs, awards, and scholarly initiatives, The Music Academy continues to play a central role in preserving, documenting, and promoting South Indian classical music and dance worldwide.

History

The Music Academy Madras traces its origins to the All India Music Conference held in Madras in 1927, organized alongside the session of the Indian National Congress. During the conference, leading musicians and scholars proposed the creation of a permanent institution that would support the development and preservation of Indian classical music. As a result, the Academy was formally established on 18 August 1928 and inaugurated by C. P. Ramaswami Iyer.

One of the driving forces behind the institution was E. Krishna Iyer, who served as the Academy’s secretary in its early years and played a crucial role in reviving Bharatanatyam, which had faced social stigma in the early twentieth century. Through conferences, performances, and scholarly discussions, the Academy became an influential platform shaping the modern presentation and pedagogy of South Indian classical arts.

The Academy’s permanent building on T.T.K. Road in Chennai was developed after the foundation stone was laid in 1955 by Jawaharlal Nehru. The complex includes the T. T. Krishnamachari Hall, a large auditorium with about 1,600 seats, and the Kasturi Srinivasan Hall, a smaller venue built in 1982 for lecture demonstrations, concerts, and academic events. Over time, the Academy has grown into one of the most respected institutions shaping the global reputation of Carnatic music.
