About Rise

Rise is the fifth studio album by Indian sitar player Anoushka Shankar. Angel Records released the album on September 25, 2005. The album contains nine tracks and blends Indian classical music with elements of flamenco, jazz, and electronic influences.

Anoushka Shankar composed and performed all tracks on Rise. The album features collaborations with percussionist Tanmoy Bose, flutist Pedro Eustache, and guitarist Jesse Cook. The tracklist includes Prayer in Passing, Red Sun, Mahadeva, Naked, Solea, Beloved, Sinister Grains, Voice of the Moon, and Ancient Love.

Prayer in Passing opens the album with a meditative sitar melody accompanied by soft percussion. Red Sun introduces a faster tempo and incorporates flamenco guitar rhythms. Mahadeva is a devotional piece dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva, featuring traditional Indian instrumentation. Naked combines sitar with electronic textures, creating a modern fusion sound.

Solea draws from flamenco traditions, with Shankar’s sitar interacting with Jesse Cook’s guitar. Beloved is a slower, melodic track with a focus on emotional expression. Sinister Grains incorporates darker, rhythmic elements, while Voice of the Moon returns to a contemplative mood. The album closes with Ancient Love, a piece that merges classical Indian raga structures with contemporary production.

The album received critical attention for its innovative fusion of genres and Shankar’s technical proficiency on the sitar. The label and exact production credits beyond the primary collaborators are not specified in available sources.
