O Shakuntala!

O Shakuntala! is a studio album by Indian slide guitarist and composer Debashish Bhattacharya. Released on July 13, 2009, the album appeared under Riverboat Records as a compact disc. The recording marks Bhattacharya’s exploration of raga-based compositions through his signature Hindustani slide guitar technique, blending traditional Indian classical elements with contemporary production.

The album contains ten original tracks. Bhattacharya composed and performed all pieces, employing his custom-made guitars, including the chaturangui (a 22-string slide guitar) and the gandharvi (a 14-string variant). The tracklist opens with Megha Re, a raga-inspired piece evoking monsoon imagery, followed by Shringar, a composition rooted in the romantic Shringar rasa. Samarpan and Baarish! further develop melodic themes tied to nature and devotion. The title track, O Shakuntala!, closes the album with a narrative reference to the classical Sanskrit play Abhijnanashakuntalam by Kalidasa.

Other notable tracks include Milaap, a dialogue between rhythmic and melodic phrases, and Priyatameshu, a slower, introspective piece. Sparsh and Amantran incorporate percussive textures alongside Bhattacharya’s slide work, while Chahat emphasizes lyrical phrasing. The album’s production preserves the acoustic resonance of the instruments, with minimal overdubs or electronic processing.

Riverboat Records, a subsidiary of World Music Network, distributed the album internationally. The release coincided with Bhattacharya’s touring schedule in 2009, which included performances in Europe and North America. Critical reception at the time noted the album’s adherence to classical forms while expanding the role of the slide guitar in Indian music.
