About Night Ragas - Volume Three

Night Ragas – Volume Three is a studio album of Hindustani classical music released in 1992. The recording features performances by flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia, vocalist Shruti Sadolikar and the brother duo Rajan Mishra and Sajan Mishra. Music Today issued the album on compact disc as part of its series dedicated to evening and night raga interpretations.

The album contains three tracks. Hariprasad Chaurasia performs Raga Maru Bihag on the bansuri. Shruti Sadolikar presents a khayal rendition of Raga Jaijaiwanti in her characteristic vocal style. Rajan Mishra and Sajan Mishra collaborate on Raga Malkaus, showcasing their jugalbandi technique in the Gwalior gharana tradition. Each track adheres to the structural conventions of alap, jor, jhala and bandish development appropriate to the selected raga.

The release date coincides with the album’s production year of 1992. Music Today served as both producer and distributor. The label’s Night Ragas series aimed to document lesser-performed evening ragas, though specific session details or recording locations remain undocumented in available sources. The album’s liner notes provide minimal contextual information beyond artist credits and raga titles.

Hariprasad Chaurasia’s contribution reflects his established approach to bansuri improvisation, while Shruti Sadolikar’s vocal work exemplifies the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana’s taan patterns. The Mishra brothers’ duet emphasizes layered melodic interplay, a hallmark of their collaborative performances. No alternate editions or reissues of this volume have been confirmed in commercial catalogs.
