About Call of the Valley
Call of the Valley is a collaborative studio album by Indian classical musicians Shivkumar Sharma, Hariprasad Chaurasia and Brij Bhushan Kabra. The artists released the album in 1968 under the His Master’s Voice label. The recording marked an early fusion of the santoor, bansuri and guitar in a structured raga-based format, though the exact production circumstances remain partially undocumented.
Shivkumar Sharma performed on the santoor, Hariprasad Chaurasia on the bansuri and Brij Bhushan Kabra on the guitar. The album adopted a two-part structure across a 12\" vinyl format. Part I features three movements: Movement I in Ahir-Bhairav, Movement II in Nat-Bhairav set to Ek Tala and Movement III in Piloo with Teen Tala. Part II includes Movement I in Bhoop using Jhap Tala, Movement II in Des with Dadra Tala and Movement III in Pahadi set to Kehrawa Tala.
The album comprises two tracks corresponding to the two parts. The release date aligns with the official 1968 publication by His Master’s Voice, though specific recording sessions or alternate editions lack verified documentation. The work gained recognition for its instrumental interplay and adaptation of traditional ragas to a contemporary ensemble setting.
No additional reissues, live versions or expanded editions are confirmed from available sources. The original vinyl remains the primary documented format for this release.
