Uday Bhawalkar

Pandit Uday Bhawalkar was born on 5 February 1966 in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. His initial exposure to classical music came from his elder sister, and at the age of 15, he received a scholarship to the Dhrupad Kendra in Bhopal. He later underwent intensive training in the guru-shishya tradition under Zia Fariduddin Dagar and subsequently under Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, two towering figures of the Dagar bani of Dhrupad. This long period of immersive training shaped his approach to raga, voice culture, and the contemplative aesthetics of Dhrupad.

He began performing in the mid-1980s and received early encouragement when Nasir Aminuddin Dagar awarded him a gold medal in 1987 after hearing his performance. Since then, Bhawalkar has presented concerts, lecture-demonstrations, and workshops across India and internationally, including in Europe, North America, and Asia. His style is noted for slow, detailed alap, clarity of swara, and emphasis on raga bhava (emotional essence).

Alongside the classical stage, he has contributed to film soundtracks for arthouse and mainstream cinema, including films by Mani Kaul, Aparna Sen, and Amol Palekar. He has also collaborated with artists from other disciplines, including contemporary dancer Astad Deboo and international ensembles, reflecting Dhrupad’s adaptability in cross-cultural contexts.

Teaching forms a major part of his work. Based in Pune, he trains students in the traditional residential format and conducts workshops in India and abroad. He has served as a visiting artist at the University of Washington and regularly teaches through the Asian Music Circuit in London. He is a guru at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata and at Bengal Parampara Sangeetalayon in Dhaka.

In 1992, he helped establish the Veena Foundation in memory of Zia Mohiuddin Dagar to support Dhrupad through concerts, scholarships, and educational initiatives.
