Biography
Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar was born on 14 March 1929 in Udaipur, Rajasthan, into the illustrious Dagar family, known for its unbroken lineage of dhrupad musicians. His early musical training began under his father, Ustad Ziauddin Khan Dagar, who served as a court musician to the Maharana of Udaipur. Alongside vocal training, he studied the rudra veena—an instrument traditionally used as a practice aid for vocalists rather than as a solo performance medium.
Defying convention, Zia Mohiuddin Dagar chose the rudra veena as his primary instrument and gave his first public recital at the age of sixteen. After his father’s passing, he introduced structural modifications to the instrument to enhance resonance and sustain, allowing it to faithfully reflect the nuances of dhrupad singing. These changes resulted in a larger, deeper-toned instrument, often referred to as the “Dagar veena,” which he performed in the southern playing posture due to its size and weight.
The years following Indian independence were marked by severe financial hardship for the Dagar family, as royal patronage came to an end. Despite economic struggles and widespread skepticism toward dhrupad and the rudra veena, Zia Mohiuddin Dagar remained committed to his art. His playing style became renowned for its unhurried elaboration of ragas, minimal accompaniment—often limited to tanpura—and meticulous attention to microtonal detail.
Internationally, he was deeply engaged in teaching and performing, holding academic associations with institutions such as the American Society for Eastern Arts, Wesleyan University, the Rotterdam Music Conservatory, and the University of Washington. In recognition of his contribution to Indian classical music, he received several honors, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1981) and the Kalidas Samman (1986).
In 1982, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar established the Dhrupad Gurukul near Panvel, Mumbai, formalizing his vision of imparting music through the traditional guru-shishya parampara. He passed away on 28 September 1990, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the most influential figures in the revival and preservation of the rudra veena and the dhrupad tradition.
