About Morning and Evening Ragas
Morning and Evening Ragas is a studio album by Indian classical musician Ali Akbar Khan. Released on January 1, 1966, the album presents two raga performances that exemplify the North Indian (Hindustani) classical tradition. Khan performs on the sarod, accompanied by an unspecified tabla player.
The album contains two tracks. Gujjari Todi serves as the morning raga, characterized by its introspective and melodic development in the early hours. Misra Mand represents the evening raga, showcasing a more elaborate and rhythmic structure suited to the later part of the day. Both compositions adhere to the alap-jor-jhala format typical of instrumental Hindustani music, with Khan employing intricate meend (glissando) and gamak (ornamentation) techniques.
The release format and original label remain undocumented in available sources. The recording captures Khan’s mastery of the Maihar gharana style, emphasizing deep emotional expression and technical precision. The album stands as an example of his mid-career work, following his relocation to the United States in 1956 and preceding his establishment of the Ali Akbar College of Music in California.
No additional production details, session musicians, or reissue information are confirmed. The album’s reception and commercial performance are not recorded in accessible archives.
