About Divya
Divya is a studio album by Indian classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar, released on January 1, 2007. The album presents traditional khyal performances in the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana style, a school of Hindustani classical music known for its intricate melodic elaboration and rhythmic precision. Amonkar composed and rendered the recordings, accompanying herself with minimal instrumental support to emphasize vocal technique and raga exploration.
The album contains six tracks structured as two raga presentations. The first half features Raga Gunkali, a rare and complex raga associated with the late evening or early night. Amonkar begins with an alap, a slow, improvisational introduction that establishes the raga’s melodic framework. She follows with a madhya laya khyal (medium-tempo composition) and concludes the raga with a drut khyal (fast-tempo composition), demonstrating layered rhythmic and tonal development.
The second half centers on Raga Madhyamad Sarang, a raga traditionally performed in the late afternoon. Amonkar employs the same three-part structure: an alap to unfold the raga’s characteristics, a madhya laya khyal to deepen the emotional expression, and a drut khyal to showcase agility and virtuosity. The performances adhere to classical conventions while reflecting Amonkar’s interpretive signature, marked by microtonal inflections and dynamic phrasing.
The release format and label details remain unverified in available sources. The album serves as a documented example of Amonkar’s late-career work, capturing her mastery of raga exposition and khyal gayaki. Notable tracks include the Raga Gunkali - Alap for its meditative depth and the Raga Madhyamad Sarang - Drut Khyal for its technical brilliance. The recordings target audiences of Hindustani classical music, offering a focused study of two ragas through Amonkar’s distinctive vocalism.
