Biography
Kishori Amonkar was a towering figure in Hindustani classical music, widely regarded for her uncompromising artistic vision and emotionally charged performances. Born on 10 April 1932 in Bombay, she was the daughter and disciple of Mogubai Kurdikar, one of the foremost exponents of the Jaipur Gharana. Her early training was rigorous and demanding, shaped by her mother’s insistence on discipline, precision, and independent musical thinking. As a young performer, Kishori accompanied her mother on the tanpura and absorbed the aesthetics of concert performance at close quarters.
In addition to her Jaipur Gharana foundation, Kishori Amonkar received guidance from musicians of other traditions, including Anjanibai Malpekar of the Bhendibazaar Gharana, as well as teachers from the Agra and Gwalior gharanas. This exposure allowed her to deepen her understanding of meend, swara development, and raga grammar. Over time, she developed a highly personal style that retained the structural strength of Jaipur gayaki while prioritizing emotional expression, rasa, and spiritual intensity.
Her approach to khayal singing was marked by introspection and depth rather than display. She believed music to be a form of sadhana, often describing it as a dialogue with the divine. While rooted in classical rigor, she was unafraid to challenge conventions, sometimes shortening or reshaping traditional forms to serve emotional truth. Alongside khayal, she was a highly respected interpreter of thumri and bhajan, bringing the same seriousness and sensitivity to lighter classical genres.
Kishori Amonkar was also a thinker and speaker on music, delivering lectures across India on rasa, aesthetics, and musical philosophy. She composed bandishes, mentored numerous students who later became respected performers, and authored the Marathi book Swaraartha Ramani, articulating her musical thought.
Awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Fellowship, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, she passed away in 2017, leaving behind a legacy defined by artistic courage, spiritual depth, and an enduring influence on generations of classical musicians.
