Kala Festival

The Kala Festival is a contemporary addition to the United Kingdom's cultural environment, organised by KalaSudha, an arts and digital media organisation in London. Launched in 2023, the festival aims to make high-quality Indian classical music accessible beyond traditional cultural centres. Unlike stationary festivals, it is a touring initiative that visits cities across the UK, including London, Cambridge, Norwich, Reading, Leicester, Darington, and Maidenhead, bringing the meditative, intricate sounds of Indian ragas to local concert halls and community spaces. 

The festival was founded by Rajeev Kumar and Shabd Pyari, who aimed to use modern digital and production standards to promote classical heritage. The inaugural season in 2023 featured themed concerts like Music Without Boundaries and Concert for Harmony and Peace, which highlighted the common appeal of instrumental music. These events often showcase unique collaborations, such as Indian Slide Guitar, Piano, and Tabla, fusing traditional Hindustani structures with a global perspective. The festival returned in 2025 and 2026 with an expanded schedule, solidifying its standing as a key event for the South Asian diaspora and local music fans. 

A defining characteristic of the Kala Festival centres on its focus on the listening experience, or Rasa. The organisers prioritise intimate settings that promote a strong connection between performer and audience. Alongside main-stage performances by maestros such as Ustad Akram Khan and Pandit Ajay Prasanna, the festival often includes educational workshops and lecture-demonstrations. These sessions explain the details of the Gharana system and the technicalities of rhythm and melody, guaranteeing the art form is understood and appreciated by a multi-generational audience in the British context.
