Biography

Viraj Joshi represents the next generation of the Kirana Gharana tradition, carrying forward a lineage shaped by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and sustained by his father and guru, Shrinivas Joshi. Born on 10 March 2003 into a deeply musical family, Viraj began his training in Hindustani classical music at an early age under the guidance of his father, with initial mentoring from Sudhakar Chavan. His formative years were immersed in disciplined riyaaz and close listening to the great masters, particularly his grandfather, whose music remains a central influence on his artistic outlook.

Viraj came into public notice at the age of six when he accompanied his father to the Sawai Gandharva Festival, a platform synonymous with the Kirana tradition. This early exposure laid the foundation for his performing life. Over the years, he has presented independent concerts in Pune, Belgaum, Vadodara, Mumbai, and Miraj at the Sangeet Ratna Abdul Karim Khan Festival, as well as in Indore and Bhopal.

Known for his mellifluous voice and natural musical sensitivity, Viraj has been received warmly by audiences across generations. In 2014, he was awarded the prestigious Bharatratna Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship by the Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha. His performances have been featured on ABP Majha and IBN Lokmat, including an Abhang concert in 2015.

His growing international presence includes a recent two-and-a-half-month concert tour of the United States, where he was received with enthusiasm by listeners and cultural organizations. He has also been honored with the Young Talent Award by the Rotary Club, personally selected by Dr. Smt. Prabha Atre.

With rigorous training, a strong aesthetic inheritance, and a steadily expanding performance career, Viraj Joshi continues to shape his identity as a Hindustani vocalist rooted in tradition and responsive to contemporary audiences.
