Shrinivas Joshi

Shrinivas Joshi is a Hindustani classical vocalist rooted in the Kirana Gharana, representing a lineage synonymous with depth, discipline, and raga-centered aesthetics. Born in 1967 in Pune, he is the son of the iconic vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Vatsalabai Joshi. Growing up in a household shaped by rigorous musical practice, he absorbed the values of tradition, introspection, and long-form raga development that define the Kirana style.

Despite completing a B.Tech degree from IIT Delhi, Shrinivas Joshi chose to devote himself entirely to music. He began performing in his mid-twenties and presented his first solo concert at the age of thirty. Since then, he has built a career marked by steady artistic growth and a commitment to classical purity.

He is a regular presence at major platforms, including the prestigious Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav, where he continues the legacy associated with his father’s name. His vocalism reflects the core principles of the Kirana Gharana—emphasis on swara, slow unfolding of raga, tonal precision, and contemplative expression.

Beyond performance, Shrinivas Joshi plays an active institutional role in Indian classical music. He serves as the president of the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, the organization that curates and sustains the Sawai Gandharva festival. Through his work as a performer and cultural custodian, he contributes to the continuity and relevance of the Hindustani classical tradition in contemporary times.
