Biography

Parakkal Unnikrishnan, born in Palakkad, Kerala, is a distinguished Carnatic vocalist and accomplished playback singer whose career bridges classical music and cinema. His roots are deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Chennai, specifically within the historic "Kesari Kuteeram" in Royapettah. As the great-grandson of the legendary Ayurvedic physician and philanthropist Dr K. N. Kesari, the founder of the Telugu women's magazine Gruhalakshmi. Unnikrishnan grew up in an environment where scholarly pursuits and the fine arts were daily bread. This ancestral grace is often credited for the "sowkhyam" (a sense of tranquil comfort) that defines his singing style today. Raised in Chennai in a culturally rooted family, he was introduced to music at an early age and received formal Carnatic training beginning at the age of twelve. While his peers were focused solely on academics, Unnikrishnan was a multifaceted youth, excelling as a talented cricketer at Vivekananda College and playing for the Madras University team. This athletic discipline arguably contributed to the lung capacity and "layam" (rhythm) required for his demanding vocal career.

Raised in Chennai in a culturally rooted family, he was introduced to music at an early age and received formal Carnatic training beginning at the age of twelve. His early guidance under V. L. Seshadri, followed by inspiration from Dr S. Ramanathan, laid the foundation for his musical discipline. Dr S. Ramanathan, a colossus of musicology, did not just teach him songs; he instilled a "researcher’s mindset" regarding Raga Lakshana. This influence is evident in how Unnikrishnan approaches rare ragas with surgical precision. His advanced grooming under Savithri Sathyamurthy and exposure to the Veena Dhanammal bani through workshops with T. Brinda and T. Viswanathan significantly shaped his classical approach. The "Dhanammal Bani" is known for its intricate, microtonal gamakas and an emphasis on the "bhava" (emotion) of the lyrics, a signature that Unnikrishnan has preserved even in his most commercial recordings.

Before turning fully professional, Unnikrishnan pursued higher education and worked in the corporate sector, spending nearly eight years as an executive at Parry’s Confectionery Ltd. It is a charming irony of his life that he went from managing the sales of sweets to delivering the "sweetest" melodies the Indian film industry had ever heard. This phase ended in the mid-1990s when he committed himself entirely to music. His breakthrough in playback singing came with nationally acclaimed Tamil film songs composed by A. R. Rahman, earning him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his debut film performances, for the songs "Ennavale Adi Ennavale" (Kadhalan) and "Uyirum Neeye" (Pavithra). This was a historic moment, as A. R. Rahman once remarked on his vocal texture:

"Unnikrishnan’s voice has a certain purity and a 'divine' quality that felt perfect for the complex, soulful ballads I was composing. He brought a classical weight to cinema without making it feel heavy."

He became the first male singer to receive this award for a Tamil song, shattering the long-standing dominance of older veterans and proving that a pure Carnatic voice could rule the pop charts. Despite his success in cinema, Unnikrishnan has consistently prioritised classical music, performing Carnatic concerts across India and abroad. He is a regular "A-Top" grade artist at All India Radio and a staple at the Chennai December Music Season. The legendary "Pitamaha" of Carnatic music, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, once praised his clarity by stating:

"He has a voice that is gold; his pathanthara (musical lineage) is as clean as his rendition."

He is particularly respected for maintaining classical integrity while engaging with a wider audience through film, devotional albums, and television. His devotional recordings, especially his rendering of Harivarasanam, received wide acceptance and are regarded as among the most notable interpretations after K. J. Yesudas. His rendition is celebrated for its meditative quality, often described by listeners as a "sonic balm" for the soul.

In addition to performance, Unnikrishnan has contributed to music education and popular culture as a long-time judge on major televised music competitions, most notably the Airtel Super Singer series. Known as the "Gentle Judge," he is admired for his constructive criticism and for explaining complex musical concepts to contestants with humility. His legacy also extends to his family; his daughter, Uthara Unnikrishnan, famously followed in his footsteps by winning the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer at the age of ten, creating a rare father-daughter record in Indian history. He has also explored cross-genre collaborations, including jazz-based presentations, while remaining rooted in classical aesthetics.

He has also explored cross-genre collaborations, including jazz-based presentations with the Eli Yamin Jazz Quartet and creative pianist Anil Srinivasan, while remaining rooted in classical aesthetics. This versatility has made him a global ambassador for Indian music, performing at prestigious venues like the Kennedy Centre and the Sydney Opera House. Honoured with numerous state and national awards, including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award and the Isai Peroli title, P. Unnikrishnan continues to be recognised as a musician who upholds tradition while engaging thoughtfully with contemporary musical spaces. As a leading critic for The Hindu once noted,

"Unnikrishnan is that rare bridge between the traditionalists and the modernists, satisfying both with a single, resonant note."
