Biography

Kattassery Joseph Yesudas is widely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists in the history of Indian music. His stylistic range bridges Carnatic classical performance, devotional repertoire, and Indian film music, making him a rare artist whose voice resonates across artistic traditions and generations. From his early musical training under respected gurus in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, his foundation in classical principles has remained central to his work, shaping a singing style noted for clarity, expressive ornamentation, and emotional depth.

Yesudas rose to prominence in the 1960s and soon became the dominant male playback singer in Malayalam cinema. His collaborations with composers such as G. Devarajan, M. S. Baburaj, and Ravindra Jain produced some of the most acclaimed songs in Indian film history. His entry into Hindi cinema expanded his national reach, while live performances across the Middle East, Europe, and the United States have strengthened his role as a global ambassador for Indian music.

His contributions are recognized through major honors, including the Padma Vibhushan and a record eight National Film Awards. Beyond performance, Yesudas has invested in music education, founding Tharanganisari School of Music and establishing the Tharangini recording label to support high-quality productions.

Deeply spiritual in his approach, he remains closely associated with devotional singing traditions, particularly the revered “Harivarasanam” at Sabarimala. With an active career spanning more than 60 years, Yesudas continues to influence singers and audiences, shaping the sound and legacy of Indian classical and popular music.
